The Future is Here: RoboSumo competition showcases tech-savvy students

St Anthony's Primary School hosted an exciting and innovative competition on Tuesday 30 July, bringing together six primary schools from the Townsville Diocese for a day of technological challenges. The RoboSumo competition saw students from St Anthony's, Marian, St Benedict's, St Clare's, St Joseph's Mundingburra, and St Mary's Bowen displaying their teamwork, problem solving, and critical and creative thinking skills.

The competition was divided into three events, each one designed to test the students' abilities and push them outside their comfort zones. The first event was the Treasure Hunt, where the teams had to use their programming skills to guide their robots through a maze in search of hidden treasures. This event was followed by the Demolition Derby, a fast-paced competition where the robots engaged in a battle of destruction. The highlight of the day was the RoboSumo challenge, where the teams were required to design offensive and defensive attachments for their robots. This event not only tested the trickiest programming of the day, but also promoted teamwork and strategic thinking as the teams strategized to outsmart their opponents. Watching the robots bump and push each other in an attempt to knock their opponents out of the ring was an exhilarating experience for everyone involved.

After a day filled with fierce competition and impressive displays of technological skills, it was St Benedict's team that emerged victorious, claiming the title of highest scoring team. However, the overall champions for the day were St Benedict's, with St Anthony's coming in a close second and St Clare's following in third place. The champions of St Benedict's were proudly awarded with a giant Lego trophy, which they can display at their school until the next RoboSumo competition.

The day was not only a showcase of technological talent, but also a platform for students to learn important skills such as teamwork, problem solving, and critical and creative thinking.

The RoboSumo competition at St Anthony's Primary School was a fantastic opportunity for students to come together, show off their skills, and learn from each other. It was a day filled with excitement, challenges, and valuable experiences that will surely be remembered by all who participated. Congratulations to all the schools involved, and we can't wait to see what the next RoboSumo competition has in store!
