St Margaret Mary's College celebrates 60 years!
St Margaret Mary’s College celebrated its 60th anniversary last month, bringing together past and present staff members, students, as well as esteemed guests in a series of memorable events.
The festivities kicked off on Friday, August 18, with a special Whole School Assembly held in Benedictine Place.
It was a nostalgic gathering where the college’s rich history and enduring commitment to education were celebrated. Following the assembly, a warm welcome awaited guests and alumni at Cafe Alacoque, where a morning tea was served. The joyful spirit continued as guided college tours allowed attendees to reminisce about their school days and explore the campus’s evolution.
On Saturday, August 19, the celebration continued with a grand dinner at the Townsville RSL, commencing at 6 pm. About 160 guests, including past and current staff members and alumni, gathered to commemorate this significant milestone. Among the honored guests were several Good Samaritan Sisters, who have been instrumental in the college’s history. The former Principal, Sr. Ursula O’Rourke, who led St. Margaret Mary’s Primary School from January 1976 to December 1982, was also in attendance, adding a touch of nostalgia to the evening.
Sunday, August 20, saw the festivities spill over to the St Mary Mackillop Parish in Mundingburra, which was also celebrating its own 100th Anniversary. A heartwarming Parish Mass at 7.30 am marked the day as both institutions came together to celebrate their respective milestones.
Principal Kathy Park expressed her pride and gratitude for the college’s 60-year journey.
“Over the past decades and as an inclusive Catholic community, we have always strived to create a space where individuals from diverse backgrounds and beliefs feel welcomed. Our commitment to cultivating an environment of inclusivity, understanding and social justice has been the cornerstone of our journey.”
“Throughout our history, we have witnessed the transformative power of education. Our College has become a place of intellectual exploration, where critical thinking and creativity flourish, inspiring our students to become compassionate leaders in their communities.”
St Margaret Mary’s College extended its warm invitation to all alumni and guests to join in the celebration, marking a heartfelt milestone in the institution’s history.
