Spirit of Catholic Education Awards
Earlier this week, we celebrated our Spirit of Catholic Education Award nominees and winner! These awards highlight the important work being undertaken by staff, parents, carers and volunteers who support Catholic school students.
Nominees, including teams, are recognised across a number of categories for excellence in their work, leadership, service, initiative and creating change for First Nations students.

Greg Searle
Holy Spirit Catholic School
Greg, the grounds man at Holy Spirit Catholic School, takes great pride in maintaining the school's grounds to create a welcoming and safe environment for the community. Despite challenges, his positive attitude and dedication to Catholic schooling make him a valuable asset to the school.
Kathy Giddy
St Francis Catholic School, Ayr
Kathy Giddy was nominated for her exceptional dedication and commitment to supporting her grandchildren's school tuckshop. As a familiar face to all students, Kathy goes above and beyond in making sure that each child's hunger needs are met. Her willingness to lend a helping hand and enthusiasm for the tuckshop have greatly impacted the success of the tuckshop and the well-being of students and staff. Kathy's service and contribution embody the spirit of community and exemplify the Good Samaritan's P.A.T.H. values.

St Mary’s Catholic School, Bowen
Kathy, a dedicated school librarian, has made a lasting impact on the community through her passion for literacy and her commitment to helping students become independent readers. She has also demonstrated innovation and integrity through her flexibility and support for new staff and her involvement in programs such as The Writing Project. Kathy's lasting impact is seen through her knowledge and use of effective literacy interventions, her ability to adapt to individual student needs, and her love for reading. She continues to support the school team and go above and beyond to help improve the community.
Peter Cavalot
St Teresa’s Abergowrie
Congratulations to Peter who is not only a nominee, but this year’s Townsville Diocesan winner of the Spirit of Catholic Education Awards. Peter travelled to Cairns where he was recognised at the state-wide Spirit of Catholic Education Award presentation dinner where the official launch of Catholic Education Week took place. Peter Cavalot has spent 41 years dedicated to Catholic education, embodying and teaching the core values of the faith through leadership and mentorship. He has made a remarkable impact, particularly in his role with the Young Christian Group, where he has guided staff and students in translating Catholic beliefs into actionable projects that benefit the community. Through his work with First Nations learners, Peter has not only provided academic support, but also emotional and spiritual growth, using challenging experiences as tools for positive change and promoting cultural sensitivity in education. His focus on individual needs and bridging the gap between belief and practice demonstrates his belief in the transformative power of faith in education.

Cecilia is an incredibly dedicated member of the college community, serving as a School Officer, College Photographer, Magazine Co-ordinator, and valuable asset in multiple departments. She always goes the extra mile to create a positive environment for staff and students, often volunteering her own time to attend events and assist with various projects.

Columba Catholic College, Charters Towers
Paula is not just a school officer librarian, she is a dedicated member of the school community who goes above and beyond to foster a love of reading and provide a welcoming and supportive library environment for all students. She spends her own time opening the library for students to engage in different activities, such as reading, crafting, and playing games with friends. Her dedication and creativity have made the library a special place for students to learn and grow.

Christine's personal life exemplifies the essence of Catholic Identity. Her dedication to service is evident in her involvement with local parish where she selflessly devotes time to organising masses, liturgies and events embodying the call to love and serve others.
Jordan Harries

Through initiatives such as Love Bites, Rock & Water, and PB4L, he creates a nurturing and inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and supported. Leonie Shucksmith
Ignatius Park College, Townsville
Leonie, a devoted and supportive member of the Ignatius Park College community, has shown great integrity and service in taking on numerous roles to support the school, from classroom teacher to volunteer work in the Learning Resource Centre and hospitality kitchens. Her commitment to constantly improving and supporting others makes her an outstanding example of a Catholic teacher and community member in the school.
Jenny Dominguez
Marian Catholic School, Currajong
Jenny was nominated for this award due to her exceptional service and devotion to the school community, demonstrated through her role as tuckshop convenor, dedication to school events, and involvement in the school parish. Her warm and caring nature, along with her willingness to go above and beyond, make her a valuable member of the Marian Catholic school family and a true example of living out the Catholic faith.

Mary Help of Christians Catholic College, Shaw
Mardi Grubba has shown exceptional Catholic leadership in her previous role as Deputy Principal - Pastoral at Southern Cross Catholic College. Her warmth, positivity, and dedication have fostered a strong sense of community and faith-centred care among staff and students. As the Foundation Principal of Mary Help of Christians Catholic College, she continues to bring her experience, vision, and passion to create a welcoming and innovative learning environment. Mardi's professionalism, integrity, and commitment exemplify the values of Mary Help of Christians and she will continue to be a beacon of faith-centered leadership in the Townsville Diocese.

Veronica is a highly respected and valued staff member at Southern Cross Catholic College, known for her commitment to excellence, integrity, empathy, and teamwork. Southern Cross Catholic College, Annandale

St Anthony’s Catholic College, Deeragun
Claire has made significant contributions to St Anthony's Catholic College, particularly in promoting understanding and appreciation of First Nations culture. Good Shepherd Catholic School, Rasmussen
The Deadly Learners team has successfully integrated First Nations culture into all aspects of Good Shepherd Catholic School Rasmussen by implementing a program that allows First Nations students to teach their peers about their culture, organising community events to celebrate and share First Nations culture, and hosting a bi-annual Big Mob Brekkie to strengthen relationships between families and the school. This has also led to an annual Deadly Showcase to celebrate First Nations students and their learnings.

Peter Groundwater, an experienced educator, was nominated for the 2024 Aunty Joan Hendriks Award for his efforts to promote understanding and inclusivity of First Nations people in his school community. Through workshops, events, and partnerships, Peter has worked diligently to create culturally safe spaces and ensure that Indigenous perspectives are integrated into the school curriculum. His dedication to fostering respectful relationships and promoting a sense of belonging for all students is commendable.
Jan O’Shea
St Teresa’s College, Abergowrie
Jan O'Shea is a passionate and dedicated educator who uses her deep understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories to create inclusive and culturally safe learning environments. Through her work in remote communities and with the Catholic Education Office, Jan has made significant contributions to promoting reconciliation and improving educational outcomes for Indigenous youth. Her commitment to collaboration and partnership with First Nations communities has led to positive changes in addressing hearing health and creating a deeper appreciation for Indigenous cultures within education communities.
