Thursday, May 9th, saw the annual Mary Help of Christians netball carnival take place at Townsville Basketball. This highly anticipated event, convened by Southern Cross Catholic College, brought together eight teams from various Catholic and Christian schools in the Townsville area. With participants from Years 7 to 12, the carnival provided a platform for young netball enthusiasts to showcase their skills and compete in a friendly yet competitive environment.

The participating teams were divided into two divisions: Juniors and Seniors. Among the schools that took part in the carnival were 4 of our Townsville Catholic schools; Southern Cross Catholic College, Ryan Catholic College, St Margaret Mary’s College, and Gilroy Santa Maria College. Along with teams from Calvary Christian College, the day was an enjoyable one with all teams playing in the spirit of the day.

The Mary Help of Christians Netball carnival not only provided an opportunity for teams to fine-tune their game play tactics ahead of the upcoming major carnivals, but it also allowed students to break free from the confines of the classroom and indulge in their love for the sport. The carnival served as a platform for like-minded students from different schools to come together, bond, and showcase their passion for netball.

The day was filled with thrilling matches, impressive displays of skill, and moments of pure sportsmanship. The teams demonstrated their dedication and determination. The main game for the day, the Senior competition final, was played against Ryan Catholic College and St Margaret Mary’s College. Two teams that always fight tooth and nail on the court, fought to the very end going into 2x over time and then going to ‘wins by 2’, the 60-minute game finally came to an end with St Margaret Mary’s being awarded the win! The Junior competition was taken out by an incredibly strong Ryan Catholic College team, this will definitely be a team to watch in the coming years.

This event not only provides a platform for healthy competition but also fosters a sense of community and unity among the Catholic schools in the diocese. The success of the Mary Help of Christians Netball carnival serves as a testament to the importance of such events in the school netball season. It not only allows teams to prepare for upcoming major carnivals but also provides a platform for students to showcase their talent, build connections, and foster a love for the sport.
