JCU Student receives Townsville Catholic Education Award

The 2023 Catholic Education Prize was awarded to Melissa Lovell, a graduating student from the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Education) program. This prestigious prize, established in 1997, recognizes a student with the highest overall achievement in both academic studies and professional experience during their final year. It is generously funded through donations from the Catholic Education Office of the Townsville Diocese.

Melissa Lovell’s journey to this achievement is inspiring. Reflecting on her path, Melissa shared, “I've always wanted to be a teacher, and as cliché as that sounds, I never thought I had the smarts. I thought, you know what? I'll just try. If I don't make it, I might make it, but I can give it a go." Her determination led her to complete a bridging course and gain acceptance into James Cook University (JCU). Her placements at St Clare’s, where she was mentored by Melanie Singh, were particularly impactful. “It was so beautiful. I didn’t want to leave. The support from all the staff was excellent,” Melissa added. She discovered her resilience during her studies and felt a sense of accomplishment when her hard work was recognized through this award.

Peter Stower, Director of Learning and Teaching at Townsville Catholic Education, emphasised the importance of this prize. He said, "We know that early childhood is a critical aspect of teaching. Having this award helps us attract good teachers from universities who are interested in the early years." The Catholic Education Prize not only celebrates academic excellence but also strengthens the relationship between Catholic education and aspiring teachers, ensuring a bright future for students and educators alike.
