St John Bosco Catholic School, Collinsville

As part of ongoing school renewal, St John Bosco Catholic School in Collinsville recently updated our school logo to reflect our Catholic identity, Traditional Custodians and local community.

The process we followed has provided a forum for conversations about who we are, why we do what we do and how we reflect our Catholic Identity each day.

The students, staff, parish and school community were engaged throughout the process which saw the development of a logo that encompasses 5 elements.

  1. The Mercy cross to acknowledge the Sisters of Mercy who founded St John Bosco’s school in 1936.
  2. A wedge tail eagle, the totem of the local Indigenous people, the Birriah.
  3. The Bowen River which flows through the heart of Collinsville.
  4. The gum blossom, the local flora of the region which represents the community.
  5. The shield which pays homage to the history of the school and the previous logo.

To refresh the school with the new branding, over the break, new signage was installed which in turn has encouraged students, staff and family to reflect on the history and tradition of our school.

One change that evoked discussion includes the renaming of our school library as the Mercy Resource Centre, to acknowledge the Mercy nuns who began the school in 1936. These Catholic markers have had a positive effect on beginning to drive the Catholic Identity of our school and have provided an opportunity for the school to break open with the school community some of the beliefs our school stands for in this ever changing world.

By making meaning of these markers we begin to build a shared understanding of the Charism of our school and in turn our Catholic Identity. There is much more to be done but as we embark on this journey of recontextualisation it is hoped we can continue to evoke new meanings and bring them into the SJB story.
